In 1928, Tamiami Trail opened the area for development. Tamiami Trail (the road between Miami and Tampa) soon became US 41. However, in 1982 the extension of Interstate 75 caused development to slow, due to travelers passing the exit for Bonita Springs on their way to either Fort Myers, Naples, or Marco Island. Today, Bonita Springs is at the epicenter of the Naples area to north areas of Collier County and southern expansion of the Greater Fort Myers area.
In the last ten years Bonita Springs’ population has almost tripled from 13,600 to over 39,900. During the winter seasonal months the population swells to about 50,000.
