History of Pelican Bay
When Westinghouse Communities of Naples, Inc., purchased 2,104 acres along the Gulf of Mexico in 1972, they had one goal in mind: First, to create a benchmark community that would do justice to it’s pristine three-mile stretch of Gulf beach and mangrove forested western border. Second, to the natural beauty of it’s pine and palmetto uplands, and to it’s sophisticated residential neighbor to the south, Naples, Florida. And third, to cater to all of its future resident’s zest for the finest place to live. After nearly six years of site studies, planning, engineering, and scrutiny through local, regional, state and federal agencies, Pelican Bay ’s master plan was complete. Today this plan has unfolded to reveal an award-winning community that has been applauded as one of Florida’s finest examples of planned community living—a community which now provides the superior lifestyle enjoyed by nearly 15,000 people.
Elevated boardwalks were constructed by workers and machinery that never touched the mangrove floor so as not to disturb this sensitive environment. Today, these boardwalks wind their way to the beach, providing a bridge from the neighborhoods of Pelican Bay to a world teeming with natural beauty and native wildlife. An unspoiled preserve designed to be enjoyed by residents for generations to come. Millions of people have made the trip down the boardwalks since they opened in the early 1980’s.
